Know Your Number

VITAL OMEGA+ & VITAL BALANCE

8%

That’s the Omega-3 Index researchers associate with better cardiovascular and inflammatory markers. The average American sits at 4.12%.

This page walks through what that number means, what the research actually shows, how Vital Omega+ and Vital Balance differ, and how to get started.

Almost nobody is where they think they are

In 2024, NHANES measured omega-3 levels directly in red blood cells for the first time — not estimated from food diaries, but actually tested — across more than 7,200 Americans aged six and up.

  • The mean Omega-3 Index was 4.12% — about half the target
  • 54% fell below 4%, the level considered undesirable
  • Nearly 98% were below the 8% target

Supplement users did score higher on average. But when 98% of the population falls short of target, “I take a fish oil” and “my levels are actually good” are plainly two different statements. The usual reason isn’t effort — it’s absorption. Not every omega product delivers EPA and DHA into your bloodstream the same way.

Which is why guessing is the weakest option available to you.

The Omega-3 Index is a number, not an opinion

It measures how much EPA and DHA is actually sitting in your red blood cells — not what you ate, not what you bought, but what your body is holding onto.

Researchers call 8% and above the “8% Club.” It’s a simple finger-prick test, and it turns the whole conversation from belief into measurement.

My own number, before and after

5.18% → 9.66%

That’s my Omega-3 Index, tested before and after taking Vital Omega+ consistently. I started below the Western-diet average and finished inside the 8% Club. I didn’t change anything else dramatic — I just took it, and then I tested again.

I wrote up both tests in full: my first test and why testing matters, and how I finally earned my place in the 8% Club.

Two ways to get your omega

Both are full spectrum — omegas 3, 7, 9 and 11 — and both use the more bioavailable triglyceride form. The difference is format and absorption.

Vital Omega+

Softgel capsules. 1,000 mg EPA and 570 mg DHA per serving, plus 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 — the highest D3 of the two. Made from small cold-water fish. Two softgels daily with a meal. This is the one that moved my own Index.

Vital Balance

Liquid sachet. The same full-spectrum blend with liposomal delivery for up to 5.5× greater absorption, plus added polyphenols. One sachet daily. Citrus flavoured — worth knowing if you’ve tried a liquid fish oil before and couldn’t get past the aftertaste.

How they compare

Measured against three widely sold omega-3 supplements. Vital Omega+ delivers more EPA than two of them combined, at a lower daily cost than either.

The 90-day guarantee

If your Omega-3 Index doesn’t improve after 90 days of consistent use, it’s backed by a money-back guarantee.

This is the part I’d point a sceptic at. The product is meant to be judged by a measured number moving, not by a claim on the bottle. Very few supplement companies will attach a test result to their own product and then stand behind it.

What the research shows

AreaFindingEvidence base
Mood and anxiety2 g/day or more of combined EPA+DHA reduced anxiety symptoms; lower doses showed no effect2024 review of 23 clinical trials
Recovery and performanceSupports physical and cognitive performance, recovery and injury managementSystematic review, 61 studies, 2006–2024
SafetyRelatively safe and well tolerated across decades of trialsMeta-analysis of RCTs, 1987–2023

Dose matters more than the brand name. Most single-capsule supplements deliver 250–500 mg of EPA+DHA — well under the 2 g/day threshold where the mood findings above appear at all.

Common questions

Do I need the test kit before I start?

No. You can start either way. The kit is there for anyone who wants a clear “before” number — especially useful if you’re already on another supplement and curious where you actually stand.

How long before I’d notice a difference?

The 90-day window reflects roughly how long an Omega-3 Index takes to shift meaningfully with consistent use. This is cumulative, not overnight.

Is it safe alongside medication?

If you’re on blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, or are managing any medical condition, check with your doctor first. Omega-3 supplements can interact with certain medications.

Which one should I pick?

Capsules and the higher D3 — Vital Omega+. Starting from a low number, or you want the strongest absorption and don’t mind a sachet — Vital Balance. Message me if you’d rather talk it through.
